Vehicle History

Overall condition: Very Good
Number of owners: 3
History: Part (16 stamps in the service book by the main dealer. Two keys.)
MOT: 16th July 2024

Since its registration on the 18th of March 1992, this 500 SL has been enjoyed by a total of just three keepers, with just two former keepers noted on the V5C. The vehicle would cover nearly 96,037 miles between the two former keepers, before being acquired by the current keeper in August 2022. Throughout their ownership, the vehicle has covered only a handful of miles, evidently being savoured for special occasions.

In terms of paperwork, this 500 SL comes with the original owner’s booklet pack and Mercedes-Benz documents, along with the current MOT certificate, and the current V5C document.

Exterior

  • Proudly displays the R129’s iconic styling
  • Metallic silver paintwork, in great condition
  • Features 16” alloy wheels, and a removable hard-top roof
  • Presented today in excellent overall condition
  • Four brand new tyres

The R129 generation of SL-Class marked a rather significant shift in styling for Mercedes-Benz, introducing a very defined aesthetic, with sharp new edges, and muscular body lines. As such, the platform continues to stand out from the lineup, with a design that seems to age like fine wine.

Finished in metallic silver, this now 31-year-old SL 500 is a fantastic showcase of the iconic design, offering very impressive original paintwork, with incredibly few signs of age. There are of course light blemishes to show, including markings to both doors, light marking to the boot, and the expected front-end wear, but hardly anything capable of detracting from a very well-preserved original finish.

Accompanying the metallic paintwork are the correct 16” alloy wheels, each of which offers a rather respectable finish, with plenty of tyre tread left to enjoy. All exterior trim components and details also reflect similar levels of care, with no noteworthy damage, or blemishes to note.

Overall, the vehicle offers a very respectable finish for its age, with arguably only the expected light blemishes, and ageing to show.

Mechanics

  • Powered by a 5L V8, and automatic transmission
  • Offered in great mechanical condition
  • Retro-fitted with push-button start
  • Holds advisory-free MOT until July 2024
  • Ready to be enjoyed

In contrast to a few of its rivals at the time, the R129 platform never shied away from interesting drivetrain options, instead offering a range of engines, and gearbox configurations. Sitting towards the top of its class, this 500 SL does of course boast a 5L V8, along with a smooth 4-speed automatic gearbox. Combined with a rigid chassis and characterful handling, this peppy drivetrain sets the 500 SL aside as a very capable, yet comfortable grand-tourer.

Buyers will be pleased to know that the vehicle is said to perform brilliantly, with the current keeper noting only an occasional cold-start struggle, and no additional known issues once warm. The vehicle’s great mechanical health is likely attributed to a combination of the low mileage covered and the excellent care shown to the vehicle over the years.

Although not a great deal of history is noted, previous MOT history suggests the vehicle has received all necessary repairs, and this SL now proudly sports advisory-free MOT until the 16th of July 2024.

If you’re looking to jump right into the driver’s seat of this charming 500 SL, you’ll find the vehicle more than ready to hit the roads.

Interior

  • Features grey leather upholstery, with walnut details
  • Offers excellent comfort levels, and a high specification
  • Features heated front seats, with electric adjustment, and memory functions
  • Equipped with a single DIN Kenwood head unit
  • Presented in excellent overall condition

In true Mercedes-Benz fashion, this 500 SL offers a very comfortable interior, packed with comforts and luxury features. Perhaps most notable of which, are the electronically adjustable front seats, which come complete with heating functions, and memory options. In addition to being in full working order, both front seats boast an impressive condition for their age, with only the pictured light signs of use to show. The rear seats, of course, reflect far fewer miles and stand in fantastic condition with very little to fault.

Carpeting throughout the vehicle reflects similar levels of care, presenting tidy grey carpeting, and clean black floor mats atop. Both door cards follow suit, and host an array of near wear-free controls, and contact points. You’ll also find the dashboard and accompanying details in excellent condition, very much befitting the low owner count, and low mileage figure displayed today.

A key feature on this 500 SL is of course the removable hardtop, which is believed to operate without fault, latching and unlatching as it should, with a press of the button. All other additional electronic components and controls throughout the cabin are also believed to be in full working order, although it appears the lower display on the instrument cluster is beginning to show its age.

Overall, the interior leaves little to be further desired, instead presenting a tidy, spacious and incredibly comfortable space from which to enjoy, this magnificent V8 SL.

Why bid?

Sitting towards the top of the R129 generation of SL vehicles, this 500 SL presents a fantastic opportunity to obtain a well-specced SL with plenty of power, and desirable features. Further to the car’s merit, this example boasts just 3 total keepers, and proudly displays a rather impressive overall condition, with plenty of MOT left to enjoy.
