Vehicle History

Overall condition: Very Good
Number of owners: 1 in UK
History: Some, much from Netherlands
MOT: Exempt

Styled by Tom Tjaarda and designed by Pininfarina for Fiat, the 124 Spider has a monocoque shell with advanced mechanics.

Introduced in 1966 with a 1.4-litre engine which grew to 2-litres by 1979, the 124 Spider was never offered as a right-hand drive model. This car was originally sold in the Netherlands and extensive records were kept by its then owners before being imported to the UK in 2020.

Exterior

The current owner has invested a great deal of time and money on improving the car, treating it to fresh paint, a new hood and refurbished alloy wheels – as a result it looks absolutely superb.

The dark blue bodywork was only recently professionally painted and so there are no dings or blemishes of note in the deep gloss paintwork.

This is complemented by a new tan-coloured hood, supplied and fitted by Sevenoaks-based specialists, Car Hood Warehouse. As you would expect, this is in excellent condition with a crystal clear rear window and no visible marks.

The alloy wheels have been fully-refurbished and, as with the paint and hood, look almost new, while all tyres are relatively new and display very deep tread.

The bumpers have been removed to not only provide a cleaner look, but to also reduce the overall weight, however the original bumpers are supplied with the car should the new owner wish to revert to the factory look. All brightwork and lenses are all in good condition.

Mechanics

The Fiat 124 Spider was certainly advanced compared to most of its contemporary rivals; a high-revving twin-cam engine designed by ex-Ferrari engineer Aurelio Lampredi, five-speed gearbox, coil-sprung suspension and disk brakes all working together to ensure that the model drove beautifully and felt incredibly modern.

The 124 starts easily and revs smoothly, with the five-speed manual gearbox shifting through the range crisply and easily.

Interior

The seats are trimmed in tan-coloured vinyl and are in lovely condition with very little sign of wear. The same material continues to the door cards which, along with the black fitted carpets are in excellent condition with no marks to speak of.

The wooden dashboard has recently been replaced and so has smooth, fresh lacquer over the golden timber – enhanced by the two-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel which has an attractive light patina.

A modern stereo has been added and speakers attached below the dash.

Why bid?

With a lively and characterful engine and gearbox, sharp handling and fabulous Italian style, the Fiat 124 is one of the most exciting sports cars of its era, and having been extremely well looked after by the current owner, is in stunning condition. With so few in the UK, this Spider will always stand out from the crowd.
