Vehicle History

Overall condition: Solid project
Number of owners: Unknown
History: Little
MOT: Exempt

The W113 SL Pagoda gained its name from the slightly concave hard top roof and is regarded as one of the prettiest sports cars ever built, and one of Paul Bracq’s masterpieces and are the a coupe and roadster fitted with both a soft top and an optional removable hard top.

Built between 1963 and 1971, all came with a straight 6 engine which gave excellent power, had advanced suspension for the day and radial tyres and was one of the first cars with built in crash safety – a passenger cell, crumple zones and soft interior edges made it a very advanced car.

This car has been off the road several decades. It lived in Ghana for many years, before being shipped to the UK where the owner had intended to restore it, but has now decided to move it on as a project.

Exterior

Thanks to being dry stored for many years the SL appears to be in solid if not tidy condition. The panels are straight and have very few dings, however it will need a full respray as the paint is cracked and chipped in many places. The brightwork is present and in passable condition, the bumpers have some knocks and pitting, and the car has its optional hard top, although the soft top has not been tried a new fabric hood cover was found in the roof with an excellent rear window.

The car has lost its original steel wheels and hubcaps so some aftermarket alloys have been fitted to keep it mobile.

Mechanics

The Mercedes has a 2.8 litre straight 6 fitted with a carburetor. The original manual gearbox has been replaced with a later automatic and it has an AMG twin exit back box on the exhaust. It hasn’t been started in quite some time, but the seller tells us the engine will turn over.

Interior

The cabin will need some attention to bring it back to its former glory. The dials and controls look to be in place but the dashboard will need paint and trim and the original chairs have been replaced with much later sports seats. The door cards and furniture are in reasonably good condition.

Why bid?

The Pagoda SL is one of the most desirable classic sports cars in the world, good looking and very drivable. This car needs a full restoration but that makes it a blank canvas waiting to become the new owners ideal SL.
